artist statement

My art practice contains extensive usage proto-calligraphy text and pictograph. Having been deeply influenced by Calvino's literature for many years, I have always wanted my works to achieve a sense of Calvino’s lightness, even though they address heavy issues.

My works often depict some of the issues arising from what I have seen, heard, or experienced around me; they may be political, or focused on humanity and environmental issues. These issues are heavy, yet although many people feel indifferent about them, they do matter. To avoid tediousness that comes with such a quest, I tried to approach these subjects in my paintings through a sense of harmony and the beauty of lightness. Most of all, I believe that this poetic meditation reflected in the works will enhance and communicate the tragic nature of such large and seemingly unsolvable subjects. In my art practice, I am always searching for ways to articulate the urgency of complicated and serious subjects in a light manner, without losing the seriousness and heaviness of the subjects.
